We are American citizens.
We believe in the American dream and advocate for every US citizen to have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.
We love our country.
We believe that the US is the greatest country in the world because it is the only country in the world where, clearly, the circumstances of your birth does not limit the greatness you can achieve.
We embrace “United We Stand and Divided We Fall”.
We believe that each community in our country must thrive. Suffering, pain, violence, poor outcomes and affliction anywhere is a threat to freedom and prosperity everywhere.
We educate ourselves.
We study, research and analyze a variety of data sources to understand the issues impacting our country, communities and families and make well-informed decisions about leaders who can best represent those interests.
We hold our elected officials accountable.
Regardless of party, we will regularly evaluate the words and deeds or our elected officials and make inquires about their positions, votes and actions. We require timely answers to our inquires and will not accept political platitudes as an adequate substitute for authentic engagement.
We are women.
Our American perspective, borne out of our gender experience, presents us with unique challenges and invaluable discernment and insights enabling us to be successful leaders in our families, communities, organizations and businesses.
We are black.
Our ancestors’ hard fought battle for freedom from slavery, oppression and discrimination shapes our perspective and reminds us that we can never go back or let our country be taken back…there.
We vote.
Seventy-six percent of us cast ballots in 2012….more than any other demographic in the country. This country we love was built on the backs of our ancestors who fought, bled and died to ensure we have access to the franchise. We owe it to them to work, speak out and vote to preserve our freedoms and opportunities.
Our work is not done.
Even with our educational attainment, strong voting record, hard work, determination and initiative, our American dream has not been fully realized.
As a group, black women are paid 63 cents for every dollar white men get. As pillars of our communities, we are frustrated that poverty in our rich country is so pervasive, disappointed that not enough Americans have decent healthcare options, concerned that high quality childcare is elusive for so many, and worried that accessible, affordable, high quality education is becoming scarce. Like so many Americans, these realities cause stress in our daily lives, but too many black Americans dying too soon, and unnecessarily and a school to prison pipeline leading to mass incarceration amplifies our stress. Add to this the growing racial and cultural division being stoked by demagogues, the Alt-Right and fake news and the challenges can seem insurmountable.
So, we are concerned…very concerned about the country we love, the people we love and our own destiny.
But, we are also strong, motivated, determined, prepared and have hope.
We will face the challenges. We will speak out. We will work. We will vote. And, we will win. Our families will win. Our communities will win. Our sons and daughters will win. Our country will win.
Our unity will be our strength, for as President Abraham Lincoln once said; “a house divided against itself cannot stand…” We will embrace our reality as black women and refuse to be marginalized or divided out. We expect to be respected and will return the same.
